Advice

LIGHTS

There are several lighting types possible for plant cultivation (HPS, double ended, LED, solar). It is important to understand that plants thrive on solar energy and that a quality lighting will be key to a successful harvest. Several factors may influence your choice of lighting, but that choice must be set for the duration of the growing period. A change of lighting past the stage of propagation by cuttings can turn out to be detrimental and cause yield losses and result in burning or even death of the plants.

SOILS

The three soil types are: cultivation in potting soil, in coco, or in hydroponic systems. IT IS IMPORTANT TO USE THE RIGHT FERTILIZER BASE FOR EACH SOIL TYPE. No matter the type of soil, choose properly ventilated areas and use HP potting soil (high porosity thanks to added perlite), or coco fibre of which the quality has a grain size allowing a proper drainage and low dissolved salts levels (ppm), or opt for hydroponics, using fresh water and an agitator in the basins. It is also possible to add a little amount of hydrogen peroxide.

WATER

You must use drinking water to water and fertilize your crops. Water that has a high pH value to begin with (over 8) or a low one (less than 5) or a dissolved salts value above 300 ppm should be put through reverse osmosis. It is important to verify the water’s properties every time you prepare a watering solution in order to avoid damage to plants and soils and to make sure you get the best yield possible out of the fertilizers.

POTS

There are many types of pots. Each one has its own benefits, but it is important to use the same type throughout the cultivation of a plant. Furthermore, it is also important to use progressively bigger pots at the cuttings stage and throughout growth. At the flowering stage, it is not recommended to transplant a plan, so that it doesn’t use part of its energy to boost new roots growth to the detriment of flowers and fruits.

FERTILIZER

The last element to control, but not the least. By using Fred T. Lizer products under the right conditions, you give your plants all the minerals, vitamins, and amino acids that they need to reach their full potential. However, when preparing your watering solutions, make sure that your pHs are well adjusted (soil: 6.2, coco: 5.8, hydroponics: 5.5) and that the level of dissolved minerals (ppm) is adapted to the development stage of your plants (see recipe). The watering solutions can be kept for 3 days at most and the basins must be equipped with an agitator so as to preserve the solution’s qualities and fertilizing properties.
